About Double Vision
Typically, double vision happens if the eyes are not aligned or are not focused, causing one to see double images. Two images are transmitted to the brain and translated into double vision. Both eyes are pointing to the same thing most of the time. This creates a transparent, single image but with a sufficient difference between both, so that we have a little different view. This slight difference enables us to perceive depth, often called dual vision. The more distant the eyes of an animal are, the more depth it can sense.
Double vision can cause life problems, including considerable difficulty in carrying out simple tasks. Fortunately, by neglecting one of two images, the brain prevents double vision. For keeping both eyes forming images, our brain has a complicated set of nerve and eye muscles, therefore, you should consult our eye doctor at Korber Eye care and Surgery Center in OKC to look into the cause of your double vision.
Double Vision (Diplopia) Causes
Stroke, headache, tumor of the brain, brain swelling or aneurysm of the brain can all result in vision problems like double vision. After examining, your eye physician can refer you for additional testing and treatment such as to a neurologist.
Corneal irregularities - Imagery of shapes and shadows may be caused by conditions such as keratoconus and dystrophy of the cornea.
Dry eyes - Serious dried eyes can lead to double images due to unsatisfactory or low-quality tears such as Sjogren's syndrome. Over-the-counter eye-vitamins, prescription drops or a combo of all treatments can help many people who have dry eyes.
Refractive Surgery - You might have double vision because of changes in cornea if you went through any refractive surgery such as Lasik or PRK to see better without contact or glasses. An irregular surface of the cornea can cause rays to dissipate in lieu of a properly focused image due to surgery or dryness.
Cataracts - Cataracts, generally in one eye, can cause dual pictures. Lens clouding behind the pupil may cause light rays spreading in diverse directions and creates several but unfinished images.
Cranial Nerve Palsies - Dual vision can also be led by multiple muscles failing to control their position and eye balance due to nervous paralysis, paralysis or coordination loss. Diabetes, headache, tumors, MS, meningitis, blockage in the artery or aneurysm may lead to a cranial nerve palsy.
Other Causes
Convergence Insufficiency: The eyes do not function properly in this condition. The cause is unknown; however, it is believed that the muscles which control the eye are not properly synchronized.
Diabetes: The blood vessels that deliver to the retina in the back of your eye can be affected. The nerves which control the movement of the muscle eye can also be affected.
Myasthenia Gravis: This can lead to muscle weakness, including the ones controlling the eyes.
Brain Cancers or Tumors: An eye can be restricted from free movement due to a tumor or growth or damage to the optic nerves.
Multiple Sclerosis: MS may affect nerves in the eye, as a disease affecting the central nervous system.
Black Eye: Injury can lead to the collection of blood and fluid around the eye. The eyeball or surrounding muscles and nerves may be distorted by pressure.
Head Injury: Normal eye movement is restricted by physical damage to the brain, nerves, muscle or eyepiece.
When you get dual vision and believe it to be related to one or more of these reasons aforementioned, it is better to consult an eye doctor in OKC.
Diplopia Treatment
Double vision therapies can generally include surgical operation, vision therapy, prescription eyeglasses or medication. To know the cause of your double vision, it is important to conduct an extensive eye examination. You can then seek the best treatment for the double vision from our eye doctor.
If the second image seems to wane for a long period of time, it may mean that your brain has settled on one of the pictures. While this is easier and more tolerable for you, this is not necessarily the end of it. Merely adapting to double vision may mask a grave problem that must be solved.
Come to our eye doctor in OKC for a solution of your dual vision. Our doctors will check your eyes and guide you to better eye health and clearer vision.
